The short version: Wake Up Right stores everything on your device and sends nothing to us. No account. No cloud. No analytics. No exceptions. Uninstalling the app removes all your data permanently.
1. Overview
Wake Up Right ("the App," "we," "our") is an Android alarm application developed and published as an independent project. This Privacy Policy explains what information the App accesses, how it is used, and the steps taken to protect your privacy.
We take a "privacy by architecture" approach: the App is designed so that collecting personal data is technically impossible — there is no server infrastructure to receive it.
2. Information We Collect
We collect no personal information.
Wake Up Right does not require an account, does not ask for your name or email address, and does not transmit any identifying information to any server.
All data created within the App — including alarm settings, day plans, morning routine tasks, and usage statistics — is stored exclusively on your device using Android's Room (SQLite) local database. This data:
- Never leaves your device
- Is never transmitted to any server operated by us or any third party
- Is never backed up to any cloud service by the App itself (Google's standard device backup may apply; see Section 8)
- Is permanently deleted when you uninstall the App
3. Permissions Explained
The App requests several Android permissions. Each one serves a specific, functional purpose. No permission is used for data collection or tracking.
Required Permissions
- RECEIVE_BOOT_COMPLETED — Reschedules all your alarms after device restart, so they never miss a morning.
- VIBRATE — Activates phone vibration when an alarm fires (if enabled per-alarm).
- USE_EXACT_ALARM / SCHEDULE_EXACT_ALARM — Ensures alarms fire at exactly the time you set, not drifted by Android's battery-optimization delays.
- FOREGROUND_SERVICE / FOREGROUND_SERVICE_SPECIAL_USE — Keeps the alarm ringer service alive in the foreground so it cannot be killed while actively ringing.
- REQUEST_IGNORE_BATTERY_OPTIMIZATIONS — Asks Android to exempt the App from battery optimization, preventing the system from killing the alarm service before it fires.
- SYSTEM_ALERT_WINDOW (overlay) — Allows the alarm screen to appear over your lock screen as a full-screen activity.
- WAKE_LOCK — Keeps the CPU running during active lockdown so the blocking service stays responsive.
- POST_NOTIFICATIONS — Required on Android 13+ to send bedtime reminder notifications and lockdown status notifications.
- INTERNET — Used only for (a) loading YouTube videos you have explicitly embedded in your day plans, and (b) displaying ads in the Free tier via Google AdMob. No personal data is transmitted through this connection.
Optional Permissions (User-Granted)
- PACKAGE_USAGE_STATS (Usage Access) — Used by the Phone Lockdown feature to detect when a blocked app is opened, so it can redirect you back. Without this permission, lockdown falls back to a polling method that is slightly slower. We read only app package names in the foreground — not app content, messages, or any other data.
- BIND_ACCESSIBILITY_SERVICE (Accessibility Service) — Used by the Phone Lockdown feature for sub-20ms interception of blocked apps — faster than Usage Access polling. The service reads only the package name of the currently active app. It reads no screen content, text, passwords, or any other sensitive information.
- ACCESS_NOTIFICATION_POLICY (Do Not Disturb) — Used by the Pro DND integration feature to activate a temporary "lockdown DND" policy during your morning window. The App creates an isolated AutomaticZenRule and does not modify your existing DND settings.
4. Advertising (Free Tier Only)
The free version of Wake Up Right displays banner advertisements provided by Google AdMob. AdMob may collect certain device identifiers and usage data for ad personalization purposes, subject to Google's Privacy Policy.
Upgrading to Pro removes all advertising from the App entirely.
Wake Up Right does not receive or store any data collected by AdMob.
5. YouTube Videos (Pro / User-Provided)
Pro users may embed YouTube video URLs in their day plans. When a video is played within the App, the YouTube embed player loads in a WebView, and Google's standard YouTube terms and privacy policy apply to that playback session.
Wake Up Right does not transmit the YouTube URL or any playback data to our servers. The URL is stored locally on your device as part of your day plan configuration.
6. No Analytics or Crash Reporting
Wake Up Right contains no analytics SDK (such as Firebase Analytics, Mixpanel, or Amplitude), no crash reporting service (such as Crashlytics or Sentry), and no heatmapping or session recording tool.
We have no visibility into how you use the App, how often you open it, which features you use, or whether the App has crashed on your device.
7. No Third-Party Data Sharing
We do not sell, rent, trade, or otherwise share any user data with third parties because we have no user data to share. The only third-party SDKs present in the App are Google AdMob (Free tier only) and the YouTube player embed (for user-provided video links), both of which are governed by their respective privacy policies.
8. Device Backups
The App does not initiate or manage cloud backups of your data. However, Android's built-in Auto Backup feature may back up the App's local database to your Google account if you have Auto Backup enabled system-wide. This backup is controlled entirely by Android and Google — not by Wake Up Right. You can disable Auto Backup for Wake Up Right in your Android system settings.
9. Data Retention & Deletion
Your data is retained on your device for as long as the App is installed. When you uninstall Wake Up Right, Android automatically deletes all associated App data, including your alarm settings, day plans, morning history, and statistics. There is no server-side copy to delete because none exists.
10. Children's Privacy
Wake Up Right is not directed at children under the age of 13. The App does not knowingly collect personal information from children. Because the App collects no personal information from any user, there is no specific risk of children's data being collected.
11. Changes to This Policy
If we make material changes to this Privacy Policy, we will update the "Last updated" date at the top of this page and, where appropriate, provide notice within the App. Your continued use of the App after any such change constitutes your acceptance of the updated policy.
